In the first home, we visited a young bedridden male church member who got into a motorbike accident. It was a very heart-rending moment and something that we were not prepared for. Many of our hearts sank as we entered the room, and I believed that most of us shared the same sentiment of helplessness. When we heard that he enjoys listening to songs and music, we sang Holy Forever to encourage him to have hope in God that he will receive healing and comfort.

In the second home, we visited an elderly church member living alone. With her daughter living in the city and experiencing her own challenges, this elderly lady experienced loneliness and found it difficult to find joy in her life. At her home, we had a meaningful conversation with her and gave her words of encouragement. By God’s grace, she also shared that she has in fact been feeling more joyful recently! We rounded off our visit by praying for her and singing 能不能.

At the third home, we visited another elderly lady who had an ischemic stroke and was had no sensation in her left hand and wrist. We thank God for Li Xuan’s expertise in nursing as she helped to assess the lady. Together with Kai Wen, they both shared with her exercises that she could do to prevent further loss of mobility. We also encouraged her to visit the church more often and to our surprise, she turned up for the worship and prayer session that very night at Shineforth Methodist Church!

Mong

Six youth leaders from D’Anchor Ministry, accompanied by Pastor Nat and I, went for a mission trip to Bangkok, Thailand from 26 June to 1 Jul 2019. This was my first mission trip to Thailand, as well as for most of the team members. When the trip was first discussed with the Methodist Missions Society (MMS), the intention was to visit a preaching point somewhere else. However, when our plan for the trip was confirmed, we were informed by MMS that they had arranged for another team to go there. Hence, we were offered the alternative option to go to Rangsit Church instead.

This was indeed God’s providence. Due to this change, the team had the opportunity to visit the homes of some members of the Boys Brigade from Rangsit Church on Saturday afternoon.

Story 1: The first home we visited – a grandfather who became a Christian about two years. He was dropping off his grandchildren at school when his motorbike caught fire. A church worker from Rangsit Church ‘happened’ to be there and helped to put out the fire and then invited him to church. It was through this that he went to Rangsit Church and has been attending the church faithfully despite his poor eyesight. When we visited his home, his brother-in-law who is staying with him, met an accident and was injured. After we prayed for the grandfather and his family’s situation, we also went over to pray for his brother-in-law who was sitting outside the house watching us all the time.

We prayed for his healing and after that told him to believe in Jesus. Wonder of wonders, the next day Sunday, he appeared in church on a wheelchair. Church members welcomed him and while we were having lunch, they pushed him to the pastor who prayed with him to receive Christ. Praise the Lord! He prayed with the pastor and after which the pastor removed the charms that were around his neck immediately.

Praying for the grandfather

The grandfather’s brother-in-law in the centre

Story 2: Next home of a builder, Mong – his home is just a small shed that he built to house himself, his wife and two daughters. His wife was a Roman Catholic from Laos while he was a former Buddhist. There was tension in their relationship in the beginning as the wife wanted him to become a Christian. He saw no reason why he should give up being a Buddhist. However, at one time he agreed to go to church with his wife. After that, he found that there was a fight inside his head when he was thinking of becoming a Christian. At the same time, his health was not good as he could not move his right arm and he had some tightness in his chest.

On another visit to the church, during prayer, he went forward to be prayed for. As someone prayed for his healing, he could feel as if there were ants crawling up his right arm. After the prayer, he could lift his right arm and also his chest discomfort disappeared. From then on, he became a faithful follower of Christ. When we asked him if there was anything we could pray for him, he told us to pray for his daughters as he had a vision that his daughters will one day be of great influence for change in the spiritual climate of Laos. In Laos, people do not have the freedom to worship God. We were told by our interpreter that he hears God and will do what God tells him. What great faith from a simple man!

Mong and his family

Story 3: Teaching at Watnnala School

Pastor Kuk from Thanyaburi Church hosted us and opened the way for the team to teach English in Watnnala School. It was God’s providence that we were able to go to the school as the principal was initially not in favour of a Christian group teaching the students. The students had an enjoyable time learning and playing games. We also received feedback from the school that the children found learning English fun after all.

Throughout this mission trip, I experienced the faith, love, and faithfulness of the local believers and the church workers, Pastor Kuk and Prueng, who served us and brought us around during our stay in Thailand. I thank God for his guidance and protection throughout the trip and the wonderful way he worked in and through us.

Just a few weeks ago, as I read about how the church had launched the Bible reading program through the Community Bible Experience program, I was greatly encouraged. It is indeed great to see communities and families getting back to the scriptures.

Family in Nepal

One of the main lessons that I had learnt from our Nepali Christian community is that families will have a morning prayer and evening devotion together, to begin and end their day.

Over the years, we have been trying to keep to the discipline of scripture reading and family devotion within our family. This has improved our family bonds as well as helped us to grow closer to the Lord.

Family in Missions

Another aspect in which families can grow together is through participation in missions. Our family has hosted many mission trips over the last 12 years in Nepal. We have seen many mission trippers coming as family units to serve in medical camps, children camps etc. As families serve together, they would also grow together.

For example, in a medical camp, children get to see their parents at work as they serve alongside their parents. The doctors and dentists also inspire the children and youth to serve the Lord with their skills. This has inspired many children and youth to study in the medical field.

Also, there are daily challenges faced by all during a mission trip. The children and youth get to see how the adults manage and overcome these challenges and fears first hand as they step out of their comfort zones and put their trust in God.

In addition, many of the young generation these days only see poverty through the monitor screen; as such, coming to a mission trip, many of these children and youth get to experience for themselves what poverty is like as they walk through the streets and villages.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” (Deuteronomy 6:5-7)

Seize the opportunity to impress life lessons into your family as you serve alongside in short-term mission trips.

“Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.” (Luke 15: 7)

In June 2016, I attended a local missions camp co-organised by AMKMC, AMKCMC and SKMC. Working with different organisations, this 4D3N camp raised my understanding of the underprivileged in Singapore.

Firstly, we partnered with HealthServe to serve the migrant workers in our community. We learnt so much about their working situations in Singapore and the many difficulties they are experiencing. Many of them paid a hefty sum to come to Singapore because they were promised a job that was decent paying.

However, when they arrive in Singapore, many of them encounter difficulties. The living conditions in some dorms are really in need of improvement. My heart ached so badly when I saw the injustice that they were facing; I could only love them with no strings attached.

We also worked with a professor from NUS on a “Soap with Hope” project. We made soap bars out of recycled soap and presented them to the migrant workers. And, not forgetting the polaroid photos we took for them…that was probably the happiness moment for many of them and our team.

Food From The Heart (FFTH) is another one of the organisations that we worked with. Their aim is to reach out to the less-fortunate by alleviating hunger through food distribution programmes. We were involved in packing food such as biscuits, rice, canned food and powdered drinks (i.e. Coffee and Milo) into small bags for distribution. The process took less than an hour. Following that, the residents from the block would come to collect their goodie bags. Some of the elderly were quite frail, so we helped carry the bags and accompanied them back to their unit. Those were the touching and teaching moments indeed.

Next, to the Willing Hearts. Willing Hearts is a secular, non-affiliated charity that looks into elderly, the disabled, low income families, children from single parent families or the poverty-stricken families, as well as the migrant workers in Singapore.

In this partnership, we “started work” in the wee hours of the morning.

Our team volunteered at the soup kitchen that Willing Hearts operates and the duties included preparation of food, cooking, packing and distribution. Each person was allocated to a specific task, such as deboning fishes, frying eggs or cutting vegetables. The task may be simple, but doing it repetitively made it very mundane and at the end of it, everyone felt really drained. We began to wonder our motive… then, we remembered God and His people. We are to love God’s people in the simplest things in life without expectation of any returns.

Besides those mentioned, there were still many other activities and organisations that we worked with. At the end of the local mission trip, I become mindful of the people around me who need the love of God. I begin to notice the migrant workers whenever I walk past a construction site and I’ll be prompted to say a little prayer for their safety. I also become more aware of the people sleeping on the streets at night…

Although the local missions camp had ended…. the work has really just begun.

Food From The Heart (FFTH)

I was preaching about “Christ – Our Redeemer”, an Easter message on 25 April 2015. It was about how the death of Christ opens a way for us to commune with God. When he died, the curtain of the temple was torn from above and the earth shook. Suddenly, we felt a huge shake in the sanctuary.

“Earthquake!!! Earthquake!!!”

Someone shouted. The shake gradually increased in magnitude till the entire wall seemed to be collapsing on us (it was a 7.9 magnitude!). It was also accompanied with the massive sound of wind. Immediately, we hurried down to an open space beside the church. While waiting, I continued preaching and encouraged everyone, including myself, to trust in our Great Redeemer who loves us all.

“God is our Refuge and Strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains falls into the heart of the sea” (Psalm 46: 1-2)

Are you in trouble? Is your life shaken right now?

Although we cannot prevent a shake, we can prevent our hearts from falling into pieces because of that. As we began to rebuild our lives, my family learnt to trust in God even more. With strength from God, Jacqueline and I ministered to our friends in Nepal through relief aid ministries and reconstruction ministry. Amen.
